Again the Japanese are going crazy. You can only love ‘em. No one else has the guts to invent and produce such crazy items. This time it’s a piggy bank with a face. It might not sound like something new, but this one literally eats your money! It has sensor implanted in the eyes and they react as soon as an object gets close. The Face Bank / piggy bank then starts to open it’s mouth start chewing. Now this one I got to own.

Philips premieres the ultimate home cinematic viewing experience with the Cinema 21:9 LCD TV

Philips breaks new ground in the realm of home entertainment with the world’s first cinema-proportioned LCD television. Cinema 21:9 lets you enjoy movies as you would in the cinema and just as the director intended. Cinema 21:9 boasts a 56” screen that is shaped in the 21:9 aspect ratio, so movies in the 2.39:1 format completely fill the screen – exactly as you experience at the cinema. Complimentary three-sided Ambilight Spectra combines with the on-screen action to completely immerse you in the movie and deliver the ultimate home cinematic viewing experience.

Traditional LCD televisions compromise on this experience by distorting the picture to fill the screen – losing the full scope of the original shot – or by displaying the picture in letterbox format with black bars at the top and bottom. Cinema 21:9 solves these issues to give the viewer an uncompromised and absorbing cinematic viewing experience, never before available in the home.

Using highly advanced formatting technology, regular 16:9 content from sources such as TV broadcasts and games consoles is also adapted to fill the 21:9 screen.

Des Power, Senior Vice President Marketing Television, Philips Consumer Lifestyle, commented: “With our unique Cinema 21:9 we have developed a television which takes you as close to the experience that you enjoy at the cinema as you can get without buying a ticket. We believe that to really become absorbed in watching a film at home consumers are looking for a real cinematic viewing experience, so we have launched the world’s first cinema-proportioned TV screen perfectly complemented by our immersive Ambilight technology.”

He added, “Philips new Cinema 21:9 takes enjoying movies at home to an entirely new level, the advantages over a traditional 16:9 ratio screen in side by side comparisons are truly striking.”

The Cinema 21:9 LCD TV will be available in spring 2009. More detailed product specifications will follow at the end of February 2009.

Eyes: High power laser module beams do have the potential to cause serious and permanent eye injuries. An incident at a rave in Russia in mid 2008 where dozens of ravers were blinded by the in appropriate use of lasers is a tragic example. The higher the power of a laser, the more likely it is to cause injury. The official safe power limit given by the US Food and Drug Authority (FDA) is 5mW. This limit is conservative and lasers of 10mW or less will not cause eye injury.

Where high powered lasers are used and eye exposure is likely, laser eye protection are essential. These glasses are specifically designed to block different wavelengths of light so you need to make sure the glasses you are wearing will block the laser you are using. For example if you are using a green laser, you need to make sure the laser safety glasses you are using will block light with a 532nm wavelength.

Never under any circumstances use general purpose glasses such as sunglasses to protect your eyes from lasers. These glasses will provide little or no protection and in some cases may even focus the laser beam and create more damage.

Skin: As a rule of thumb, portable lasers which can go up to 600mW in power are not dangerous or capable of causing harm to skin. Starting at 75mW of power lasers will sting in several seconds and will sting instantly at 300mW or higher. Skin will only injured if the exposed part of the body is not removed from the beam after stinging occurs.

Lasers at powers higher than 1 watt are capable of causing serious skin injuries but these lasers are all bench mounted and normally used in controlled environments such as laboratories.

Radiation & Cancer: Despite what a large number ofpeople believe, normal green, blue, orange, red, violet and infrared laser pointers and laser modules do not give out harmful radiation or cause cancer. A fluorescent light, LCD TV or bar heater emit the same type of light as lasers and are just as much chance of causing cancer which is no chance.

Military lasers: Despite a ban in 1995 on lasers that caused blindness or eye injuries, military establishments all over the world have been investing billions of dollars in laser research. So these laser weapons are all vehicle based and non portable, have severe limitations on their effectiveness and have not yet officially been used in combat.

Portable lasers and laser pointers are being used by military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan on an individual basis. These lasers are used for non lethal deterrent and target identification. They do not cause any harm and at the powers and ranges used, are not capable of causing harm.

COMMODORE 64

At the time of its introduction, the C64’s graphics and sound capabilities were rivaled only by the Atari 8-bit family. This was at a time when most IBM PCs and compatibles had text-only display adapter cards, monochrome monitors, and sound consisting of squeaks and beeps from the built-in tiny, low-quality speaker.

Due to its advanced graphics and sound, the C64 is often credited with starting the computer subculture known as the demoscene. Commodore 64 demos. The C64 lost its top position among demo coders when the 16-bit Commodore Amiga and Atari ST were released in 1985, however it still remained a very popular platform for demo coding up to the early 90s.

By the turn of the millennium, it is still being actively used as a demo machine, especially for music (its sound chip even being used in special sound cards for PCs, and the Elektron SidStation synthesizer). Unfortunately, the differences between PAL and NTSC C64s caused compatibility problems between U.S./Canadian C64s and those from most other countries. The vast majority of demos run only on PAL machines.

Even though the Commodore 64 was released in 1982, it was still a strong competitor for the range of the number of games released to the Sega Master System and the Nintendo Entertainment System, despite these consoles were released three to four years later than the C64.

Here is a video with 100 Commodore 64 games shown in 10 minutes.

COMMODORE AMIGA

Amiga software covers a wide range of software for the Amiga computer, both productivity and games, both commercial and hobbyist. The Amiga software market was particularly active in the late 1980s and early 1990s but has since the period 1996/1999 dwindled into almost only a hobbyist scene.

During its lifetime, the number of applications made available for the Amiga was in excess of 2,000, with over 10,000 utilities(these utilities are almost all collected into Aminet major repository). However, it was perceived as a games machine from outside its community of experienced and professional users. In fact, there were also more than 2,000 games available for Amiga.

Some Amiga programs were ported to other platforms or inspired new programs still used today, such as those aimed at 3D rendering or audio creations, e.g. Lightwave and Blender, whose development started for the Amiga platform only. The first multimedia word processors for Amiga, such as TextCraft, Scribble!, and Wordworth, were the first on the market to allow implement full-colour WYSIWYG (with other platforms still only implementing black and white previews) and even allowing the embedding of audio files.

Programs are still being developed for AmigaOS classic and AmigaOS 4 and related operating systems, MorphOS and AROS.

Here is a video with 100 Commodore Amiga games shown in 10 minutes.

What would the world look like without those crazy Japanese and their crazy inventions. The newest gadget is called Tuttuki Bako and is basically a video game with a somehow older graphic display then we are used too. Looks kind of like an old calculator display. Today we expect almost realistic like graphics. It seems to me that Nintendo opened up some doors with their new way of getting the gamer psychically active with the Wii system. The Tuttuki Bako is a squared box with a hole on the side where you have to insert your finger and on the front is has a display that will actually show a virtual image of your finger. Then you will interact with the Tuttuki Bako in various ways such. I’m not quite sure what the games exactly is going to be like but judging from this gametrailer ad it could look like fun. According to what I have read the machine should be available on the market mid November and be around 30$.

The so-called Tuttuki Bako, Tuttuki Box, features a display that shows a digital replica of your finger once you put it into the hole in the right side of the device and start moving. Users can then play with a panda bear or a small figure, explore a “virtual” lake and touch a girl’s face or a slime ball.
The battery-powered box, which also doubles as a clock, is sized at just 105×120×87mm.

Check out this lastest gadget from WowWee. Thoose guys sure are coming up with some funny gadgets. This super hi-tech remote controlled robot you can control from your computer, no matter where you are in the world. It’s like having your own guard dog, just without all the fur and expensive dog food. It even finds its own “docking” charging bay when it is running out of battery. You can control it around the house, make certain patterns for it to follow, take snap shots and have them emailed to you. Looks like a fun toy. I have the robosapien myself and that one is a lot of fun.

Check out this youtube video and there is a link to amazon if you feel the urge to buy it.

An American military supercomputer, assembled from components originally designed for video game machines, has reached a long-sought-after computing milestone by processing more than 1.026 quadrillion calculations per second. To put the performance of the machine in perspective, Thomas D’Agostino, the administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, said that if all six billion people on earth used hand calculators and performed calculations 24 hours a day and seven days a week, it would take them 46 years to do what the Roadrunner can in one day.

The machine is an unusual blend of chips used in consumer products and advanced parallel computing technologies. The lessons that computer scientists learn by making it calculate even faster are seen as essential to the future of both personal and mobile consumer computing.

The high-performance computing goal, known as a petaflop — one thousand trillion calculations per second — has long been viewed as a crucial milestone by military, technical and scientific organizations in the United States, as well as a growing group including Japan, China and the European Union. All view supercomputing technology as a symbol of national economic competitiveness.

By running programs that find a solution in hours or even less time — compared with as long as three months on older generations of computers — petaflop machines like Roadrunner have the potential to fundamentally alter science and engineering, supercomputer experts say. Researchers can ask questions and receive answers virtually interactively and can perform experiments that would previously have been impractical.

“This is equivalent to the four-minute mile of supercomputing,” said Jack Dongarra, a computer scientist at the University of Tennessee who for several decades has tracked the performance of the fastest computers.

Each new supercomputing generation has brought scientists a step closer to faithfully simulating physical reality. It has also produced software and hardware technologies that have rapidly spilled out into the rest of the computer industry for consumer and business products.

Technology is flowing in the opposite direction as well. Consumer-oriented computing began dominating research and development spending on technology shortly after the cold war ended in the late 1980s, and that trend is evident in the design of the world’s fastest computers.

The Roadrunner is based on a radical design that includes 12,960 chips that are an improved version of an IBM Cell microprocessor, a parallel processing chip originally created for Sony’s PlayStation 3 video-game machine. The Sony chips are used as accelerators, or turbochargers, for portions of calculations.

The Roadrunner also includes a smaller number of more conventional Opteron processors, made by Advanced Micro Devices, which are already widely used in corporate servers.

“Roadrunner tells us about what will happen in the next decade,” said Horst Simon, associate laboratory director for computer science at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. “Technology is coming from the consumer electronics market and the innovation is happening first in terms of cellphones and embedded electronics.”

The innovations flowing from this generation of high-speed computers will most likely result from the way computer scientists manage the complexity of the system’s hardware.

Roadrunner, which consumes roughly three megawatts of power, or about the power required by a large suburban shopping center, requires three separate programming tools because it has three types of processors. Programmers have to figure out how to keep all of the 116,640 processor cores in the machine occupied simultaneously in order for it to run effectively.

“We’ve proved some skeptics wrong,” said Michael Anastasio, a physicist who is director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. “This gives us a window into a whole new way of computing. We can look at phenomena we have never seen before.”
